what about OT scriptures this means they still apply right? i dont want to risk my eternity for a ham sandwich. Matthew 5:17-19 1599 Geneva Bible (GNV) 17 Think not that I am come to destroy the Law, or the Prophets. I am not come to destroy them, but to fulfill them. 18 For truly I say unto you, Till heaven and earth perish, one jot or one tittle of the Law shall not escape, till all things be fulfilled. 19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall observe and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. .... Isaiah 66:17 1599 Geneva Bible (GNV) 17 They that sanctify themselves, and purify themselves in the gardens behind one tree in the midst eating swine’s flesh, and such abomination, even the mouse, shall be consumed together, saith the Lord. Well I'm actually going to make a few posts on that. I don't have much time tonight but I will try to finish off the Hebrew Roots post (there's a lot and I want to make sure to do a good job on it) and I'll make another post regarding something else. The long answer is that yes they apply but not as laws. We aren't required (nor are we instructed) to do them anymore. However it is important in understanding the relevance of Christ and many things in the New Testament. Saltandlight007 has the right idea.

Its a bit of a UK example but imagine 2 people go to Stonehenge. One is a historian and her interest is how the stones were moved in ancient times. The other is a self proclaimed druid wishing to fulfil his religious obligations. Both have visited a pagan site but if you look into their hearts only one is committing spiritual fornication with idols. It is hard to avoid the world we live in but we are the lamps containing light shining into the darkness. Many churches have unacceptable images in them. Can we avoid the dollar bill or even the ten pound note which glorifies Darwin and the scoffers who do not believe in God's creation, flood or judgment to come? No, we don't have to. They are of the world and show signs of a sickness we do not embrace.

On Jake's post, yes, he is right. The law (teaching) is not abolished. Millions of people try to justify themselves by this minimum standard even today. We don't have to. The Bible tells us that no-one has been saved by the law, we have a better offer prophesied and then fulfilled by Jesus Christ. We can choose to put ourselves under the law but to do so is to ignore and deny the completed work of our Savior. It is a snare to avoid that lead Pharisees into idolatry. It's not for me to say where hypocrites and vipers go. We can choose freedom in this life and everlasting life to come.
