I've had some people say their activation code wasn't working etc.... so I went through the whole registration process again myself & I believe it may be a browser issue. So whatever you used initially.... try a different one & get a re-issue on the code if necessary.
Hope that helps...

troubleshooting info from 'proboards':
If you're having difficulty logging into your forum, here are some tips to remember:
Use the username you originally registered with on the forum – don't try to login with your account "display" name. Your username is the name you provided when you initially created the account on the forum. If you created the forum you're attempting to login to, your username is "admin". Also, ensure the username is typed all in lowercase, has no spaces and, is not your email address.
If this is your first time logging into your forum account, be sure to use the password you provided ProBoards on the registration page and not the activation key that was provided in your welcome email. Once you login to your forum with your username and password, you will then be asked for your activation key. You can also refer back to the ProBoards welcome email for your forum username if it's needed again in the future.
If you're getting an error saying you're using an invalid username / password combination, you can use our "Forgot Password" page to help recover your password. Access this page by clicking "Forgot Password" on the forum's login page. On the password recovery page you will be able to enter in your username or your email address to recover your password.
ProBoards uses browser cookies to keep you logged into your member account. If you do not have cookies enabled or have corrupt browser cookies, this may prevent you from staying logged into your forum. Check the settings of your web browser to ensure you have cookies enabled. If cookies are enabled but you're still having issues staying logged in, try clearing your temporary internet files (cookies & cache). After this, attempt another login to see if this has corrected your problem.

Unfortunately there are known issues that can occur for AT&T users in some locations where they may not be able to login to their forum account while on the AT&T network. This is due to a cookie that AT&T attempts to inject along with the ProBoards cookies to save their session. I'm afraid this is an issue that only AT&T can correct, as it's an issue that's specific to their network (and only in part of the country). If he connects the iPad through a wifi connection, though, he should be able to login with no problems
....If you're using AT&T's data service, I'm afraid there's nothing we can do on our end to correct it. You can feel free to contact AT&T on the matter however, as they are the only data service provider, and only in part of the country, where this issue is experienced. All other network providers work fine.

Are cookies turned off on the computer that was having problems? Cookies must be on to log into a forum correctly.
it could also be corrupt cookies in the web browser that's causing the issue as well. If you see yourself as online in the info center after you login, but you are not actually logged into your account, this means the forum is working fine as it recognized your username and password and created a session to log you in. So the forum is doing everything correctly, but the issue seems to be coming from the specific web browser you were using since it was making that cookie expire early which keeps you logged out.
You can test this theory by opening IE and then click the gear icon in the top-right hand corner of the web browser. Next, navigate to "Safety" and then click the "InPrivate Browsing" option. In the new window that comes up, visit the forum and login and see if that works for you
have you tried clearing your temporary internet files, and disconnected and reconnected to the internet as that can sometimes cure your problem.

i've read that proboards does reject some email providers that are known for spam use.... although I cannot find a listed 'blacklist' of what they'd be. in using them you'd be able to register, but then not login. so best advice is to use an email addy from a major email provider like gmail, yahoo, aol etc.
