CAT - welcome to the boards and the forum !! I would like to address your first prayer request. When you get a chance, read 1 Corinthians Chapter 12. Then jump over to the first part of Chapter 14. The last verse in chapter 12 says "eagerly desire the greater gifts" - Tongues is listed last. Its the least of the gifts. Perhaps God wants you to have a different gift. Instead of asking for tongues - why not ask for whatever gift(s) he wants to give you ? Why not ask for all the gifts and then see what happens ?
God does not want anything to get in the way of our relationship w/him. If he thinks that you might be so completely in love w/the gift of tongues and that it may impact your relationship w/him then that could be a reason why it has not happened yet. Anything in our lives has the potential to become an idol if we are not careful. I am not saying that's what will happen but if God sees there is a potential for the gift of tongues to become an idol for you, then he wont give it to you - because he doesn't want anything to interfere w/your relationship w/him - even if it is a gift. I think thats why more people dont receive more gifts in general - i think the potential for it to become an idol or for it to become more important than their own relationship w/the Lord is a big risk. If suddenly people go around using their gifts all over the place and forget who gave the gift in the first place - there is a great tendency for people they minister to, to become dependent on the person and not on the Lord. And there is also temptation for the person that receives the gift to neglect their own relationship w/God and solely focus on using the gift - which ends up glorifying the person and not God.
Hope this is helpful !

Hope this is helpful ! Ouch. Thank you for your words of wisdom. I just *might* have been sinking into a case of desiring the gift more than the Giver. I went straight to prayer and re-surrendered all of me to God, including *my* desires. And asked Him for whatever HE wants for me. Whatever brings YOU the most glory, God! I had just read thru 1 Corinthians 14 yesterday. And per your suggestion, chapter 12 this morning. But I don't like what it says! Haha! "All do not speak with tongues, do they?" Sigh~. I struggle so much with words when speaking with people and with God. I want the Spirit to take over and do the talking for me - hehe.

ya know sis the Bible says that all can prophesy but it also says that some are prophets. it also says that each gift is by the same Holy Spirit. all in the body can flow in any and all of the gifts of the Holy Spirit depending on how we are led. but some are called to specific ministries like prophet and so those people get a recurring dose of that gift and they have it all their life. service is the highest gift in the kingdom because all of the other gifts flow through a heart of humility and love in a more powerful and useable way than if from a different place. Jesus called himself a servant, the prophets called themselves Gods servants. the heart is more important than the gifts:) God can use you to minister His heart, because you want to minister His heart. and when your heart is like His heart that is the point when He will give you the desires of YOUR heart:) so seek the gifts as you seek His heart for people and ministering love to them and the gifts will flow mightily:)
that being said, late in acts, maybe 19??? paul meets some people who have believed and been baptized. he asks what type of baptism, and they said johns, we didn't know there was more. (been there) he then baptized them in the Holy Spirit. its clear from this verse that one can repent and be baptized without baptism in the Holy Spirit. and its clear that not only can believers get it later but that ministers like paul can impart it. so if you are seeking that particular good thing of God, first understand it scripturally enough to really believe it, second find a minister known for imparting it and 3rd make sure you don't stop praying day and night until it comes. I found step 1, and 2 in the derek prince sermon that HG recommended me 3 years ago called receive the Holy Spirit. but step 3 was on me. i prayed one night and it didn't happen. so i set aside a night with more time and prayed for it for hours. still didn't happen. then i went to the shower to get ready for bed and cryed my eyes out to Jesus. then it happened, and it changed my life and it was amazing!!
accessing Gods supernatural authority for the first time can take awhile to break through. last week i went to train and find new gifts. for 3 days i found Gods love and tears and my spirit burning inside me. at the end of the 3rd day i prayed for 2 women and they were both healed instantly. it was a fight to break through to that point, and i haven't broken through to that point since. but i have seen the goodness of God in the land of the living. just enough to know its there and to keep seeking. and if you keep seeking and keep loving sis you are going to see much greater things than you even knew you were looking for:)

buildthefarm, thank you very much for your comments. Re step 1, I would like to think I understand it and I do most definitely believe it. Re #2, I so wish that were possible. From an email to HG: "I live in Japan where Christians are few and far between and quite conservative. I couldn't imagine finding someone to lay their hands on me to receive the gift." That's when I found her videos. And #3, I am. I watched Derek Prince's videos too and when it got to the end when everyone was supposed to start speaking in tongues and I couldn't, I just burst out crying and crying! I feel like I need to get some clarification on something... I explained an experience I had in my intro that I have kind of been assuming was baptism in the Holy Spirit. What does everyone think? Not so? If not, then what was it? I think James took it to mean I rec'd the baptism. Is baptism in the Holy Spirit always accompanied by a gift? " started praying and asking. As I was telling God how wonderful and amazing and holy (etc) He was, I starting feeling pressure on my abdomen as if something was pushing down on my belly. The pressure would go from there out my limbs and up my throat. I realized I was also shaking and tingling."

cat... ya, rec' baptism. when i rec' mine i cried & no tongues too... tongues was later. this baptism is called one of 'repentance' & so the crying was good cuz there is way more deep spiritual cleansing than we could know. our 'eyes' became open & the Holy Spirit hopped in to teach, correct etc. it's good to recognize the things that bear on our hearts...whether it is a desire for a certain gifting or we are led to situations over & over, people come to us for something specific... whatever it is... that's y i suggest the giftings test coz it's like 'writing it on the wall' and saying, "i recognize this pattern or desire... Lord, I want to use & grow in it, i give u permission to stretch me here." people r downloaded w/ giftings from birth (coz God is just so generous, He really does have purpose for each n every one of us, that's y He doesn't want to lose even 1)...we can see giftings maligned by satan & he rewards them w/his petty favor.... but for peeps like us & pressing in, being faithful w/ what we r given, we can get more & more. so if yer desire is 'tongues', then continue pressing in... and also be real w/ other giftings you already have & surrender yourself over for growing deeper in them so you can turn a profit for Papa. We all have strengths in areas but He makes us so well-rounded... that no matter what lack is around us, we begin to 'be Him' to meet the need for the situation, the people etc. there have been times where i've operated as prophet because there was a need for me to do so... but i don't see myself as one. that yielded availability is key though... a willing vessel. great things happen from there no matter what! u kno what.... i think we all are church chatting a lot here when we shud keep it simple & only have prayer requests... so somehow we needa begin to separate the two and post more to category. it's hard when it's gradual tho'... but lets try to be more conscious of it for next wk
