I am hearing a lot about the correlation between tongues and the baptism of the holy spirit. I was raised in a Baptist church so actually the first time I had even heard of tongues was through one of your videos. But I really do feel like I have the baptism of the holy spirit. God has given me a lot more mental strength and enhanced a lot of my abilities. And when I go to church and worship God, sometimes I get so overwhelmed by the presence of God in there because I can feel his presence pulsing through me whenever he is in the midst. In fact, yesterday tears were flowing out of my eyes because it was so overwhelming. When I pray and read the bible, I can feel the comforting presence of angels and my desire for God has gotten so strong that all I want to do is serve him in any way possible. I feel as if my heart is a lot closer to Jesus's heart and it feels as if It's not me in my body anymore but it is Jesus. But I don't speak in tongues. My words falter a lot and a get tongue tied. God is literally on my mind allll the time. And I have all the fruits of the spirit and feel like I now have obedience because after those prayers, my will feels a lot stronger and I have been listening to everything the spirit tells me and avoiding the sins that ussually pull me down that I was struggling with before and I always will but It feels as if I have another line of protection now. Does any of this mean I have been baptized with the holy spirit? Because when I read in the bible, people started speaking in tongues when the spirit came upon them. I have yet to do that.

i didn't get tongues rt away either when the baptism in the H.S. first happened to me i had a deep repentance experience...i was at a charismatic healing mass (back when i was catholic).... it was my first time at such an event. i was slain in the spirit (first time ever) and then as i laid there i cried from the depths of my soul.... i could not control the very loud sobs... and my mom (knowing nothing of what was going on) was embarrassed and managed to get me up and out into the lobby so 'i wouldn't disturb' others LOL... but i know that every1 in there was used to this and only rejoicing for me. it's good to think about what Jesus meant when He said "Tarry"... it means to wait or stay... it's an active thing, not a sit and do nothing thing... but a maintain... be ready....anticipate thing. if we are charged to earnestly desire the greater gifts...anything we don't have is a greater gift, amen? yes, tongues is a 'life give-a-way' of the baptism in the Holy Spirit... but it's also a sign that we're amidst overcomers because overcomers tarry...they press in..they don't stop. if we do not exercises our giftings they can go bye bye... so one in tongues also proves that they are one that indeed maintains and exercises what they preach. and when they speak in tongues it's a huge sign because those filled w/ His spirit will confirm it by the the presence of the Holy Spirit also welling up in themselves. see... it's impossible for someone w/ a demonic tongue to 'get past us'...because the Holy Spirit will not confirm that stuff. counterfeit proof! another value of it is that it let's other believers know you are yielded....unashamed/unfearful to do that which seems foolish to the perishing. anyways... we can have any gifting but we must tarry. the thing that's interesting about 'tongues' is that this one seems like a 'given' as whole groups received in the scriptures at once. we all are given a measure of faith & we all are given different amounts of 'tokens' in different gifting columns, so to speak.... so some 'cash out' quicker in their tarrying than others.... but tongues is proven to be more of a free pass for all...a more entry-level gifting that opens up into the greater ones because of that 'yielding factor', that willingness to surrender and let Him take over. that doesn't mean that people not currently operating in it don't... but just a kind of common sense observation on a broad scale. so you know your God & that confidence in Him... don't feel you are less in any way... just tarry and grow w/ what you are gifted in now. rejoice in every gifting and keep on earnestly desiring

Excellent stuff hG. Eric, I'm wondering if you ever actually, specifically asked God for the baptism in the Holy Spirit. You didn't it mention in your post. The reason I ask is because decades ago I too was a Baptist wondering if I had the baptism in the Holy Spirit. I knew that the Holy Spirit dwelled within me because I had been saved for 10 years already. Another blessing was that I had been recently healed of a painful chronic illness 4 months earlier in Ca. when some " Jesus people hippie type tongues speakers"(lol) laid their hands on me. I was sooo grateful, but didn't want any of their "tongues stuff". (LOL!) The next day I was baptised in the pacific ocean and then hitch-hiked home to Chicago ... where I was met with an invitation to Uncle Sam's "come as you are party". lol. ( my draft notice). I was 19. So one night about 5 months later I heard from some soldier buddies that there was a place in a nearby town where Christians were getting together and praising the Lord. (some of my buds spoke in tongues .. some didn't .. but I was like "WHO CARES ??" .. (lol) " I'm goin"!!! During all the praising going on during that meeting i was over near a corner on my knees praising too .. and I had a thought " Am I really baptised in the Holy Spirit? I decided to ask God to answer that question. So I said " Lord, I know you saved me and I have the Holy Spirit. But some of my friends say that need to ASK you to baptise me, others say "no, you were instantly baptised in the H.S. the moment you received Christ". Both "groups" are saved and love you . Sooo... who's right? All I want is the truth Lord. Ok, Lord, I've read about the baptism in the Holy Spirit in your word, so I know it's scriptural. IF I have ALREADY been baptised in the Holy Spirit ... THANK YOU. I'm thanking you right now .. and forever. Thank you .. thank you.. thank you! On the other hand Lord, if I haven't yet been baptised in the Holy Spirit and I need to ASK ... I'm asking right NOW. Please baptise me in the Holy Spirit Lord Jesus! Amen". Well, the matter was completely settled as far as I was concerned. Never to think about it again (or so I thought) LOL. A few seconds later I felt a tremedous feeling of complete JOY and started saying "I love you Jesus" and "allelujah" over and over. ( I had never said those words before in my life .. but I was almost unable to stop it .. and decided not to fight it. I just let it come. Less than a min later I heard those audible words become a different language. It was just flowing out of me .. more and more fluently. When I realized it I said (silently) "Lord, IS THIS TONGUES? BUT I DIDN'T ASK FOR TONGUES! I JUST ASKED FOR ... " (that's when I realized that the Lord just gave me the answer to my question). .. and that's also when I heard a voice from across the room yell " Jim"!!! ( it was my pentecostal buddy .. and he was shocked. You think HE was shocked ... what about me? LOLOL Well, it's been 41 yrs since I personally got my answer from the one whom John the Baptist said " will baptise you with the Holy Spirit" (Jesus). And that's my point bro. Make sure that you specifically and sincerely ASK Him to baptise you in the Holy Spirit. In Luke 11:1 Jesus said ... "and how much more will the Father give the Holy Spirit to THOSE WHO ASK Him"? One night when my son was about 13 someone said to me "Wow, you should hear him praying in tongues over the other kids in the sancuary". I go "WHAT?.. are you sure??" I found him later and asked "when did you receive the baptism"?? He said " Two weeks ago when you told me what the Bible says about it I went and did what you said". I said .. "and ?.." He said .. " I got it". Ya, sometimes people do have to "tarry" for a bit before it's manifested in tongues, and others get it instantly. I don't know why. It's certainly not because one believer is more holy, worthy, humble or rightous than another believer. One thing I've noticed is that people that have to wait a bit almost always get it when they're praising or singing to the Lord .. and at the oddest times .. like while driving their car or singing in the shower. (seriously! LOL)! You really seem on the right track bro. Good fruit. Maybe you already do have the baptism, but not yet evidenced in Tongues. If you haven't specifically asked Him for the baptism tho, make sure that you do. ( either alone or with Spirit filled believers). Then BELIEVE that HE WILL manifest it .. and He will, just as He promised. I'll be praying for you. ( oh, and of course .. check out some of hearingGod vids about this). BTW ..Here's an interesting vid I saw yesterday James

Actually today, I had just departed during lunch to a solitary hill overlooking our highschool soccer field and was praying the whole time for the baptism and my whole body started to shake and I felt this amazing presence of joy and yea just as you words started to flow out of my mouth. But they were not as fluent as most people you see who speak in tongues. I just wish I could experience this great feeling of joy all the time though because I long for it so much!

You are in for a treat as you get even deeper into your relationship. Keep doing it. Some find it flows more easily when they have run out of superlatives when praising Him. Just enjoy the presence and keep going longer - with phone off etc as someone tries his hardest to get in the way when you start out.

I am going to the beach over the christmas break for a week and I am going to use that time to completely meditate and pray to God. He has been telling me that he will use me there so I am looking forward to that. He also said that he is holding off the holy spirit until a specific time. I believe it will be over the break because the verse comes to mind when Jesus told his disciples to wait until they become baptized by the holy spirit before they go out and spread the good news and since I am going heavily into service next semester, I think a break through moment will happen at the beach. I really hope it will

But as for now, I know to receive this baptism, I need to love the lord thy God with all my heart, mind, and strength. Pleas pray for the mind and strength part because as a teenage male, there is always this one kryptonite most of us have standing right there at the door. And when the temptation comes, it is very hard to resist so pray that whenever these temptations do come that God will give me strength to overcome. It's amazing how I've gotten rid of most other stuff holding me back from God and taking up my time from him, but that one sin is always there waiting for the opportune moment to strike. I know this is not a men's site but I had thought that it was gone and I had gotten rid of it and then it just came back a few days ago and I really... really want it to get out of my life.

God works out what we allow Him to work out. You have the most powerful force in the universe living right inside you. There is nothing that is impossible. Without Him you will blow around like so much tumbleweed at the whim of demonic winds. No wonder satan tries to distance us from God - shame, guilt, religiosity, unworthiness etc. The issue, whatever it is, is not kryptonite. It had no power over our LORD and it has no real power over you. Deal with any demonic, deliverance issues. Remember that the eyes are the window to the heart (soul and spirit); give your eyes a diet of holiness and avoid anything ungodly. Get into the word and meditate on related scriptures. Remember, you are the righteousness of God; Jesus paid for it in full.

I had wondered about this as well a few years ago, so I launched into this in a deep study. I don't speak in tongues in the natural, but once I had a dream that I was walking on the seashore walking along with some friends. As I began to wake up, I remember my language changing to English - I could not understand what my friends were talking with me about anymore. In many dreams, I remember swimming in water.
One book I read during my study was The Holy Spirit In You” by Derek Prince. He talks about other manifestations of the Holy Spirit for us who do not talk in tongues. This is a relatively short book, easy to read, and easy to understand.
I also looked up all kinds of scripture about the Holy Spirit and I came to the conclusion that we get "baptised" with the Holy Spirit sooner than we might think. Jesus sends you the Comforter once you accept Jesus as your Savior. For some, as soon as they accept Jesus, the filling of the Spirit is an outpoouring that can manifest as speaking in tongues. God knows each one of us personally and he will manifest his Spirit through us as we allow.
I encourage you to read the book from Derek Prince! I bet the Lord has other gifts for you to advance his Kingdom! Remember, you can't do anything yourself, it is by his Spirit.
In His service... sg

I remember about a year and a half ago hearing about tongues and then I came across F1's video on it. I listened to it a few times and then I went to a few other videos to learn about tongues. Then one night I prayed for 40 minutes straight and didn't get it. The next day I was praying for about 40 minutes and then suddenly my tongue went numb and tongues just bursted out. You have to show that you want it (and that goes for ANY of the spiritual gifts). For anyone having issues receiving tongues, just keep asking (Matthew 7:7).

That answered a lot of what I was looking for in regards to the survey (also, sorry for the delay lol) but I still have a few more questions for you if you don't mind.
How often do you speak in tongues now? What feelings do you get when you speak in tongues now? What comes to mind when you hear yourself speak in tongues? Have you ever asked for interpretation and/or received? Also, do you feel like obtaining tongues has enhanced you spiritually (and did you notice any change in behaviour after receiving)? [/font]

Here are some answers to your questions Jake ...
How often do you speak in tongues now? Since the early 1970s I only spoke/prayed in tongues occasionally. In Dec. 2011 I felt inspired to make a commitment to spend some time praying in tongues EVERY single day. With God's help I think I've only missed 2 or 3 days since then . I might do this for 5 min or so a few times a day if I feel prompted. THEN in the evenings, when I shut down the TV, computer etc and get quiet before the Lord I spend anywhere from 30 min to 2 hours alternating between praying with my mind (my understanding) and praying in tongues ( in/with the spirit) ... followed by periods of silence .. listening for any impressions from the Lord.
What feelings do you get when you speak in tongues now? Sometimes I don't have any feelings but I know enough by now to not let that deter me from pressing on. Most of the time tho I feel a special peace, a feeling that I am in the presence of God.
What comes to mind when you hear yourself speak in tongues? Have you ever asked for interpretation and/or received?
Most of the time I'm thinking "What in the world am I talking about"?? (LOL)
It's often a strange yet wonderful and fulfilling experience because I seem to go thru a full spectrum of emotions ... from what sounds and feels like quiet, emotional pleadings .. to what sounds like words and phrases of joy and praise .. to what sounds like declarative statements. I hear the phrases "Alleluja" and "glory to God" continually interjected when praying in tongues (in the spirit) ( that is NOT the way I pray in English when my mind is praying.) 14 "For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful. 15 What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also. 1 Cor. 14:14 - 15 I'm so glad this is true because with the brain dysfunctions it is sometimes extremely difficult (almost impossible) to concentrate enough to pray more than a few words with using my mind ... Ah, but praying in the spirit (tongues) doesn't strain my mind .. What a blessing being able to bypass it and pray spirit to spirit with God. ( I noticed you've seen the scientific evidence of this spiritual truth using MRI data on youtube and the studies you've posted). Sometimes people or situations that need prayer come to mind when praying in the spirit, so I switch to English .. using "my understanding" (my mind) to pray ... then I go back to "praying in the spirit". Have I ever asked to interpret? Yes, countless times. Have I ever interpreted my own tongue? No. ... which simply means "keep on seeking and asking", right?
.Also, do you feel like obtaining tongues has enhanced you spiritually (and did you notice any change in behaviour after receiving)? Yes, I guess I would say that it has enhanced me spiritually in some way, but I'm not sure how to explain it. I think there is an enhanced awareness of spiritual reality that I never felt before ... especially when entering the presence of God. Changes in behavior? Well, one thing that I've noticed is that when I'm praying in tongues for a while I I feel much more compassion and love for people, even specific persons .. beyond what I would normally feel. Also, I find myself praying for people or situations that I would otherwise not have even thought of. I also find that when I'm reading or listening to something that is giving me encouragement and causing my faith to rise ... those "rivers of living water" start flowing from my innermost being ... right out of my mouth. ( Got to make sure other peeps aren't around that would think I'm CrAzY). LOL
I often wonder what my tongue sounded like when I first received the baptism. I know it's quite different now. ... and how many times my language (tongue) has changed over the years and decades. 5 times? 10 times? 50 times? Wish I had recordings of them. Would be interesting.

Yeah, I have a basic outline of what I'm going to include in my essay & presentation (which I know will be the longest in the class lol). I'll update the thread I started.
