Becoming self sufficient has many advantages.
1) You get to see the power of God at work. You take a seed or baby animal and nourish it till harvest. If there is not enough rain we pray. If it rains to much we pray. If it's too hot we pray. If it's too cold we pray. We are totally dependent on God for our providence.
2) You can reduce your grocery bill. We have cut ours from $180 a week to $120 every 2 weeks.
3) You know what you're in your mouth.
Most people I talk to have more excuses than actual desire to start to grow something. The first step is to just plant something. You don't need a garden. You don't need acre's of land. All you need is a bucket and a window. Start with a tomato plant in the window sill. They produce tons of tomato's.
Tomato's can be used in various ways. Salsa, sauces, sliced up, diced up and dried out. Once you have too many you'll be forced to learn how to can. Almost every city in America has places to put on canning demo's for free. You'll meet people.
Canning is not expensive. A large pot can be purchased at a thrift store for a buck. Jars 4 for a dollar. Lids and tops under 5 bux new.
What you need to realize is God did not intend for us to live as we do in the US. We eat processed food, raised cheaply and feed inappropriately. 95% of every food in the super market has some form of corn in it. Corn that has been Genetically Modified to grow quickly and resist weed killer.
It's all done in the spirit of capitalism. More money, more money. What are the cost?
So tomorrow your gunna go out and put some dirt in that old ratty bucket and plant a tomato plant.
Because once you get that first tomato, you'll want to plant more.
