To Train Up a Child (Michael / Debi Pearl):
www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013/11/07/child-abuse-ban_n_4232693.html?ncid=webmail1
This book was in the UK news today (see above link) – I'm wondering if some of you may agree with the writings of these Evangelical Christians. Here's an extract:
"If you have to sit on him to spank him then do not hesitate. And hold him there until he is surrendered. Prove that you are bigger, tougher, more patiently enduring and are unmoved by his wailing. Defeat him totally. Accept no conditions for surrender. No compromise. You are to rule over him as a benevolent sovereign. Your word is final."
Personally, I find it upsetting on many levels and believe it is an example of what can happen when we are not listening to the Holy Spirit to interpret Scriptures. The following is a good interpretation I believe:
“Rod” (shebet) means different things in different parts of the Bible. The Hebrew dictionary gives this word various meanings: a stick (for punishment, writing, fighting, ruling, walking, etc.). While the rod could be used for hitting, it was more frequently used for guiding wandering sheep. Shepherds didn’t use the rod to beat their sheep – and children are certainly more valuable than sheep. As shepherd-author Philip Keller teaches so well in A Shepherd Looks At Psalm 23, the shepherd’s rod was used to fight off prey and the staff was used to gently guide sheep along the right path. (“Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” – Psalm 23:4).
In other words, rod = discipline / guidance (in love). If in doubt, one should ask 'what would Jesus do?'

Ew yuk, I don't like that either. Sounds like I'm behind the curtain at a cult. Love itself is the only appropriate 'domination' of another. Their 'method' has no sacrifice... Love always sacrifices as an example. Funny, I been getting stuff 4 going on a teach tangent for tomorrow n this is dwn those lines as well..

Cult-like, yes. But, seems accepted in some 'normal' Christian circles. Some may be due to incorrect teaching / behaviour often picked up from previous generations (becoming a stronghold), but in reality it can be unintentional abuse disguised as discipline - creating a distorted view of our Father God too. Imagine Him sitting on us and beating us into submission until we have no will of our own (sounds more like the enemy to me!).
Sadly, these practices can also strengthen some people's already poor view of Christians – while the enemy once again rubs his hands with glee

We have to consider the motives of Huffington Post in highlighting this minority view. Its very easy to find weirdo people claiming to be followers of Christ who are then held up by the world to discredit Christianity. It is a deceit because they cant discredit Christ. The message of Christianity is not one of domination and control.
